In the early 1950's, American regionalist painter Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) was commissioned to paint a portrait of Abraham Lincoln for the University. The painting, a mural depicting Lincoln surrounded by images of the events that led to the founding of Lincoln University, can be viewed in the Inman E. Page library. Benton refused his $15,000 commission for the work, and donated it to the University. |
