Q: What is SI?
A: SI coordinates outside-of-class study sessions (three each week) that are attached to traditionally difficult courses. You will meet with a student leader who has previously had the course with the same instructor and done well.
Q: Do I have to participate?
A: No. Participation in SI study sessions is not a course requirement. Your instructor will encourage you to take advantage of the help offered, but the choice is up to you.
Q: What does it cost?
A: Nothing. SI is free to any LU student enrolled in a class that offers SI academic support.
Q: Why should I go to SI?
A:
- SI study sessions provide guaranteed study time, without disruptions. Good students who enroll in a "hard" class often look for someone who has "been there--done that." SI provides that resource person for you from the first day of class.
- The SI leader will break down overwhelming subject matter into bite size pieces and give strategies to help you understand and apply information to essays and exams.
- SI study groups are a good place to get acquainted with fellow students, share ideas, and build campus connections.
- Bottom line: SI will help you be more successful in the course. Research has shown that SI students score an average of 0.5 to 1.0 grade points higher than those who do not participate.
