Setting up Pop Mail Clients

What is a POP client, anyway?

POP stands for "Post Office Protocol", which is an internet standard for accessing a remote email mailbox. Therefore, a "POP client" is software that you load on your PC that allows you to use POP to access your mail.

Which POP mail client do you reccommend?

There are many POP mail clients available today, including Pegasus, Eudora, Netscape Mail, Lotus CC: Mail, Microsoft Outlook Express, and many more. Although you may use any client to access your mail, Lincoln University has selected Microsoft Outlook Express as the POP mail client that it supports.

How do I set up Outlook Express?

First you must install the software. If you have a new PC, chances are that it is already installed, and you can skip to the next section. If not, download Microsoft Internet Explorer (MS IE) from Microsoft. Upgrade to IE 5.0

After installing IE, you will have the Outlook Express icon on your desktop. Double click the icon and answer the questions in the setup wizard. Below is a list of the fields that you will encounter in the setup process.

  • Display name: Type your full name (First Last) as you wish it to appear to others.
  • Email address: Type your email address (eg. myaccount@lincolnu.edu).
  • Make sure the "My incoming mail server is a" field is set to "POP3".
  • POP mail server: Type "email.lincolnu.edu" (without the quotes).
  • SMTP server: This varies. If you are on campus, it should be email.lincolnu.edu (same as POP server). If you are connecting from home, ask a technician for your Internet Service Provider what the SMTP server for your dial-in service.
  • Account name: Type your usercode (generally, your email address up to the @ sign).
  • Password: Only you know this.
  • Click on the "finish" button and you're ready to go.

If you make a mistake during the setup process, or if you need to change your info, or add a Lincoln University email account to a POP client that is already setup, you can easily access this information within the Outlook express program. Choose "Tools" from the menu bar, and select "Accounts"

Click on the "Mail" tab, and select "Add" to add a new account, and follow the directions in the "New Account Wizard". To edit the properties of an existing account, select the account you would like to edit and click "Properties".

In the "Account Properties" window, you need only be concerned with the "General" tab and the "Servers" tab. You shouldn't change any of the settings in the other tabs. The "General" tab contains five fields and a checkbox. The first field is simply the account's description, and can be anything you like. The other fields are self explanitory. If you want Outlook Express to check this account when you hit the "Send/Receive" button, then the check box should be checked.

The "Servers" tab allows you to change the information regarding your POP3 and SMTP servers, as well as your account name and password for accessing that account. Refer to the information above for filling out those fields, or use the graphic below as a reference.
